Chapter 3: The Cowboy

Russ Clayton rode his horse hard and fast. The mare, he liked he feel of a lady between his legs on any terms, turned one corner after the other, and they ducked under the low branches as his cabin came into view. He was happy here with nothing and no one but Bright Star waiting for their next ride in the small stable. Sometimes he brought the other girls around, always of their own accord. But the fact remained: if his father didn’t see him married before the year was out, the old man would cut him off with nothing but the little plot of land. A part of Russ felt sure that he could make it work, maybe even thrive under the power of nothing but his own two hands. But he hadn’t lived under the old man’s thumb for so long just to be cast off because he wasn’t following the script.

“Damn you, Dad.”

Russ muttered the words under his breath and had just taken a shot of whiskey straight from the bottle when he heard a knock at his door. Feeling like it was the rap of doom, he was ready to tell his father--who else could it be?--that he had the place paid off for another six months. After that, who knew? But he’d be damned if he was going to fall into the man’s threats for the thousandth time as he swung the door open wide.

“Wanda?” Russ asked. “Thought you wanted something serious?”

“I think that cuts both ways,” she said. “Can I come in?”

Russ shrugged and beckoned her to the table. He started to pour a shot of whiskey into a metal cup when he thought better of it and fired up a shot of instant coffee with a shot of cream.

“All out of sugar,” he said.

“No worries,” Wanda said. “You still look sweet.”

And Wanda was more than that. A lot of fun. But he remembered a morning when he saw her perched on the edge of the bed, seeing her dressed when he wanted her uncovered. When Russ had tried to touch her, she shrugged him off and smiled sadly.

Where the hell is this going? You’re not going to put a ring on it. I want that.

And at the time, Russ didn’t. So they kissed across their coffee, and he sent her on her way with a wistful stare. Things were different now, and he was tempted when she took him by the hand.

“You’re here… you have to know that I’m in a bit of a bind,” he said.

“Word travels fast,” Wanda said. “And look at me with the solution.”

“The…?”

Was this a proposal? According to his father, all he had to do was lock it down to get back into the fold. And he liked Wanda. Almost enough. Maybe he could really make it work with her. Russ started to lean closer to her when she laughed him off as she patted his cheek.

“Russ, we both know that you don’t want the real thing,” Wanda said.
